It's sometimes correct to put a comma before "because".
Example: I can't imagine why anyone likes arugula, because I sure don't!

You're not taking age and location into account. For the time and place I went to school, the example sentence requires a comma. If I'd gone to school somewhere else or at another time, it might not.

Style guides are great as long as you remember that they are not universal. There are very few immutable rules of grammar; however, there are a great many common practices within regions and eras.
