You totally beat me to bringing up transformative works and Shakespeare. Now there is a writer who knew how to steal like an artist.

People on both sides of the argument should keep in mind that 90% of everything is terrible. I've read horrible original fiction, I've read horrible fanfiction, and I've read brilliant examples of both. A good story is a good story, and original fiction is not inherently better than fanfiction, or vice versa. Just enjoy what you enjoy and please can we stop having this same argument over and over.
