Fans losing touch with reality is hardly confined to shippers, or slashers more specifically, since that seems to be what you are referring to here. And there are plenty of shippers, slashers or otherwise, who have their feet firmly on the ground no matter how much they might love their ships. Most non-canon shippers, in fact, don't expect to see their pairings become canon, and a fair amount of them don't even want them to. (With only a couple exceptions, this is the case for me, personally. Canon relationships almost always bore me. I like what my imagination can come up with much more than the writers on the show.)

And there is progress being made as far as what kind of gay characters are acceptable. A good example is Max on Happy Endings who is, actually, just a regular guy (or as regular as everyone else in his circle of friends) who happens to be gay.

Damn, I love Max. I wasn't into watching Happy Endings, then I saw him in an episode randomly, and I was like 'Is he Gay? Really?' I was so happy to see him, just a regular dude, but lovin' other dudes.

Cause as a boring kinda girl who is lovin' other girls, this is an awesome character.
