I think Bioware did a great job with Aveline's character. I appreciated that she was just naturally woman with "traditionally masculine" traits and comfortable with what she was, without any of that annoying trope where women are ~defensively~ butch because of insecurity or some other shit (because no woman would be like that normally amirite?).

tldr I love Aveline too OP.

Aveline is, ngl, pretty much my favorite BioWare character ever. She was strong, awesome, and fully her own person. I also appreciate that they didn't give her a "girly" love interest. Both of her partners were badasses in their own rights. They avoided a lot of ugly tropes with her and it was so good to see.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I know that the majority fandom opinion seems to be that Aveline is unattractive, but I honestly don't get it. I think she's gorgeous and always have. I should be so lucky as to look like her.

I think she's pretty too.

But everyone's different and finds different things attractive.

Also, I feel that she suffers from "Hollywood Homely".

I think she's really pretty, as well.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think she's gorgeous, but I think she's attractive enough.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think she's gorgeous too. She's just not 'cookie cutter' attractive as it were if you compare her to the majority of 'pretty' female characters.

Aveline isn't conventional Hollywood beautiful.

That doesn't mean she's not beautiful.

I love her too, OP! When I first saw her I was just shocked. She was the first character of her kind that I had seen in video games. To me she was inspiring too, but for different reasons. I found that you could write a character like her and not only was she fantastic but people (the fandom) accepted her. I thought that was really cool.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I know a woman in RL who looks almost exactly like her who I have a massive and embarrassing crush on, if that makes you feel any better, OP.

I couldn't resist flirting with Aveline, even with my gay Hawke. She's just so likable and badass, and I love her. Also, she's adorable. Her hair, her wonderful freckles, her shyness when it comes to romance...all of it. I wish there were more female characters out there like her too. Being masculine or feminine shouldn't be an issue no matter your gender, and we should have more characters out there that reflect that in a positive way.

I absolutely love Aveline too. :]

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I love Aveline so much, even though I've never managed to max her on the Friend scale in-game (I'm too much of a pro-mage renegade for that!). She's a fantastic character. I'm not "masculine" in looks but I'm not classically "feminine" either, and it was really nice to have a female character in-game who wasn't big-eyed, pointy-nosed, and small-chinned.

Also, she and Anders were the only two characters in DA2 to actually legit make me cry during the game. Her "They'll not have you" line, and her "No one tells you how to grieve" speech both really resonated with me.

Though, to be fair, pretty much every female in the Dragon Age universe is fantastic. Isabela, Merrill, Anora, Meredith, Morrigan, Leliana, Wynne, Shale, Sigrun, Velanna, Ariane, they are all AWESOME and I love them to pieces.

ALL THIS. ALLLLLLLLLL THIS SO HARD.

AVELINE IS THE GREATEST.

While her face still has a bit of an uncanny valley thing going for me, I do love Aveline and think she is pretty damn awesome. I need to have a playthrough that uses her in the main party some day (sadly currently playthrough features a boys club of Varric, LI!Fenris, and Sebastian).

I thought that was Brienne of Tarth for a second.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And for just that reason, when I do my GoT!Hawke, the party will be her, a silver-tongued dwarf, and the badass pirate lady.

I never once managed to get a character to get on with Aveline, even in my third playthrough with m!Hawke who is so adorably sweet and naive. I don't know what it is. But the thing is, I love her as a character ideal, if that makes sense? I think the issue was my f!Hawkes were first sarcastic and then evil, lol, so they just did not get on.

ALSO she represents for ginger people like me, and it's a refreshing change to see actual ginger hair instead of the redder, "prettier" shades. *sagenod*

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean "get on" as in start a relationship? She's not a possible romance in-game.

Avaline is awesome. Great secret, Anon!

Oh man, Aveline! I heart Aveline so much. A little disappointed that she wasn't a romance option for Hawke, but only a little—can't argue with the woman deciding for herself when and who she's interested in and then being so amazingly human and awkward about it.

Also, battle-wise, if you build her up right she is FUCKING UNSTOPPABLE. If it wasn't for having to leave her out of Let's Do Illegal Things, she'd always be in the party.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Aveline was gorgeous and perfect and had the best battle cries. I love her to death.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
She looks like Alanna the Lioness, to me at least. Another redheaded warrior not known for her traditionally feminine looks.
