I've been a fan of the series from day one, too. The reason why I hate it is it goes beyond more then just "Dante's" hair not being silver: Tameem was a literal asshole during the interviews and he avoided any and all questions when asked about the plot and the overall direction of the game. The "old Devil May Cry" was, in his mind, "Too Japanesey."

Fucker, are you for real? The developer studio and the staff list had over half of people with Japanese names. I play games from Japanese developers because I like them, and the same could be said for others. Games don't alwat need to be dark with earth palettes and "edgy" to be hip and trendy. I like both games that have equal Western and Eastern influences. So fuck this guy and his idea thinking he'd be fixing a series that wasn't broken in the first place.

Hey, guess what? I've also been a fan since day one. That's why I don't like this reboot. I repeat; reboot. I love the games and the characters as they are -- I don't want them changed or even completely erased.

Also, ditto what the anonymous commenter above me said.

I was totally behind the new game from the beginning and had plans to buy it on release day. The gameplay looks excellent, I think Dante's redesign is kind of neat, Vergil looks fantastic and the environments are gorgeous. But all of the writing and dialog that's been in the more recent videos is just laughable.
Dante and a boss screaming "FUCK YOU" at each other? No thanks.

That said, I am really excited to play it! I just don't feel like throwing my money at the developer immediately until I know how bad the writing is going to be and if I really want to pay full price on a game that I may need to skip all of the cutscenes in to maintain my sanity. I wish more people would be willing to give it a chance, or would have at least stuck around with it for as long as I did.

That said, Tameem totally is a douche.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I've said it before, that the series was starting on a path where it was in dire need of a fresh start, but the marketing so far for this game really sucks. Seems like they're trying to be as secretive as possible about the storyline, but I just end up making faces at the trailers because the only dialogue I've heard so far is FUCK YOU and any variants. Classy advertisement.

The Vergil trailer was a bit better. And the gameplay still looks hella fun, so I'm not totally turned off and still planning on buying it when I can.

But yeah, no one's arguing that Tameem isn't a douche.

The Vergil trailer had me totally hooked and willing to keep giving the game a shot. I'm just super worried about the writing/dialog. It's not like the writing of the original four games was spectacular but at least it knew it was completely campy and it wasn't anything I'd be ashamed to play in front of my friends and family.

I'm just hoping that what they've shown us either doesn't make it into the final game or is only a very small portion of it.

I'm not a Devil May Cry fan--I'm aware of the series and interested in it, but I haven't gotten around to playing the games yet, i've just seen clips and read a light novel--so presumably I'm the target audience for a reboot.

That being said, the marketing so far has been really turning me off. I liked that the old Dante was sort of corny and wasn't necessarily a traditional "bad boy." The new Dante is just a jerk to everyone he crosses, comes across as swearing just to look "cool" and in general just comes across as immature. Also, I think the political commentary being shoved into the plot is annoying.

So, yeah, I was open to the idea of a reboot since it would let someone like me catch up, but I've completely lost interest now. The game looks like an "edgy" game for young guys. I'd say "preteen" if I thought they could actually convince their parents to buy them the game.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I think Dante is supposed to be in his late teens in the game, so at least they've got the immature part down pat.

[personal profile] brightblueink 2012-10-23 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I guess that makes some sense then.

But the way they frame it in the advertising he seems to be portrayed as if he's supposed to be legit cool.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
da

Dante was in his late teens in DMC 3.

So basically, "I like this thing and you should stop complaining because you're wrong about it! SHUT UP AND LIKE THIS THING I LIKE. JESUS."

I'm sure fans have their own reasons for liking the reboot and not liking the reboot, and their opinions are as valid as yours.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's because, if you took everything about the plot and applied it to characters with different names, it could be its own damn game. They literally just made it DMC so they could try to get the old fanbase to support it.

Yeah, it could be a new game - it seems like they kept the name for brand awareness reasons.

No, it's because the protagonist is modeled after the lead developer, and that is never a good sign.

omg here we go with this shit again.

Supporters are still claiming the haters won't stop complaining about the white hair? All I've seen for a very long while is complaints and debates over the characterization, angels, the gameplay mechanics, the FPS, the plot, the dialogue ("FUCK U"), the marketing, Ninja Theory (especially Tameem's incessant failure), Capcom, and more rarely some of the design, including Dante's. Nobody's prioritized Dante's appearance since the first couple of trailers. Hell, half the griping now is about Vergil, who does have white hair and a design much closer to his original than Dante's, but apparently has had a personality transplant.

But then, I've been closely following all sorts of DmC discussion all over the internet, and not just skimming comments on YouTube.

There's been good points made on all sides, which is why I and many people want to get our hands on it before we make a final call. If nothing else, this publicity has ensured people will be stampeding to get it. The question is, will they be stampeding to trade it back in and telling all their friends "don't buy this shit, seriously". For all my reservations, I hope not. A big enough failure will drag the whole franchise into the grave.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
But the white hair is so iconic. Why the hell would they change something like that. People who never played DMC immediately knew who it was.

It's like the DC reboot doing stupid things for no reason at all.

[identity profile] nezhit.livejournal.com 2012-10-23 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
it`s not his hair
he`s just fucking ugly
sorry

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
^ Every single bit of this! He looks like a pug.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You won't play a game because you think a character is ugly? Wow.

I gave up with DMC4 so this crap doesn't even bother me anymore. I'd probably be playing this game if they'd just *create new characters* rather than relying on the popularity of the old ones. It's ridiculous. If they wanted to be interesting they could have done a genderswap, I would have tuned in for that.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, gameplay on par with DMC4. Where's the gif where he got SSS ranking by spamming the same attack over and over when you need it?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 08:52 am (UTC)(link)
His [...] personality [are] very similar to what he had in DMC 3

Do you know what the difference is between a dog who is mischievous, stubborn, but entirely likable and cute and a dog who has a serious attitude problems, is nasty, and shits in front of your house door? Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
The reason I am frustrated with this reboot is because it shares absolutely NONE of the atmosphere and aesthetic that made the previous games great. That wonderfully over-the-top Gothic flavour is what I loved about DMC -- the dark, spooky castles and cathedrals, the awesome pipe-organ-and-choir-meets-heavy-metal soundtrack...

When you watch the most recent trailers, this is entirely absent. They've completely changed the tone of the series. It doesn't feel like a DMC game at all. Even if the gameplay is good, it just isn't the DMC I know and love.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
His hair is just the tip of the iceberg. I do hate his hair because of what it stands for (he needs to be edgier, more serious and "original" despite being yet another white male protagonist with dark brown hair, original wasn't good enough, etc etc).

And as one anon commented about it, why the hell would you change something so iconic?
It's like... Link with a brown suit, Mario with blonde hair or a pink Pikachu. It doesn't make sense, and the only message it's sending is that the original wasn't good enough. No, I don't think it's "just hair". That's my opinion, and you're free to disagree.

To me:
White-haired Dante -> tongue-in-cheek, fun Dante
dark-haired Dante -> takes himself too seriously, party-pooper Dante

You could say they're two completely different people.
