i really can't see any reason for doing so besides pure contrarianism, or maybe political motivations

where are you coming from on this, seriously

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You really think someone who prefers a tragic, complex character like Gollum over a flat character like Bilbo is doing so out of pure contrarianism? Gollum's the best character in the series. There's a reason why he became a full-blown cultural phenomenon when the movies came out.

i guess it depends on what you mean by "liking a character"

i can definitely see why you would say that Gollum is more interesting than Bilbo. i think that's probably true. but, like, the way this secret is set up is as some kind of moral judgment - "Bilbo was a big old dickhole for cheating in his game with Bilbo" - and I don't see how you can say that's true, and that you like Gollum more, while arguing that it was totally okay for Gollum to freaking EAT Bilbo. if we're evaluating these characters as poeple - which the secret seems to be doing and you seem to be doing - that doesn't make much sense to me, how it's not okay for Bilbo to cheat in a game but it's totally okay for Gollum to eat Bilbo.

unless you're being a contrarian, or you're reading the book in a very political way. which is cool! it's just that your perspective doesn't make much sense to me

idk whatever

NA

He became a cultural phenomenon after the movies because he was the best CGI creature done at this point of time. All the talk and praise I've seen for him consisted of how awesome and well done his facial expressions were and how well they captured the split personality.
Also people found his voice and manerisms to be extremely hilarious.
Ask any non-fan and they will tell you that Gollum was "funny".

Gollum IS a good, complex character, but I honestly do not understand all you Golum lovers. He was greedy and mean-spirited long before he got hold of the ring. The ring could so easily consume him because he was wicked to begin with.
Just like Isildur kept the ring in the end because the human race is weak and prone to power trips, Gollum murdered for the ring because he was a greedy little shit.
The moral of the story? Nasty behaviour is going to bite you in the ass one day.

Just because Tolkien has said that Gollum could have had a change of character if only some characters had treated him differently doesn't mean he is a poor woobie. Gollum is an asshole. A complex, well-written asshole, but still an asshole.

Oh, and Bilbo isn't totally flat either. He also is greedy and prone to lies. Just not as much as Gollum.
He is in the "first stage" when finding the ring. Hence why he decided to keep it after only a few hours, while Frodo put the ring in a box for years without getting it out or looking at it.

Just because a character is not as evil as Gollum doesn't mean they are flat, sheesh.

That's only half of it. People also loved the character and Serkis' performance.

There's a reason why people still talk about him to this day and don't give a shit about the characters in Avatar, despite those characters arguably being better CGI.

This. Gollum is a really memorable character--he was one of the most popular parts of The Hobbit, which might even be why he comes back in LOTR and played as much of a part as he did. Serkis probably helped, sure, buta lot of fans already loved him.

Political motivations? What, you think the OP's part of Big Cannibalism?!
