Re: THIS IS YOU THIS IS HOW BIGOTED YOU SOUND

As someone who is not straight, please stop. I'm well aware that writers try to draw that parallel with x-men and have from the beginning I believe, but as others have pointed out- it's a pretty silly comparison regardless. This is one of various reasons why 'word of god' has to sometimes be taken with a pinch of salt. Sometimes a parallel which writers try to run with doesn't fit very well at all. Beyond finding out around puberty it's just... eh.

With X-men there is an ACTUAL palatable and realistic reason people would fear them. Sure they can't help it, they WERE born that way, finding out as they hit puberty- but still, if I began shooting lazers with no real control I would totally get people fearing me- heck even WITH control those who don't know me would have every reason to fear. I'm an utter stranger who could snap and melt them down with my retinas! I wouldn't like it but it would be understandable. It would be like a regular person walking into a shop with guns strapped to them, only unfortunately I wouldn't have the option to leave them at home or not get them to begin with. Utterly sucks for me NGL and interesting ways to tell a story with it, but it's not a great parallel for non-het orientations.

With people who are not straight there is merely a PERCIEVED threat with no real basis at best. Either religious basis is used or pseudo-science psyci-evo bullshit at best to just finding it icky and DIFFERENT being scared that way. Being pathetic scared little children at best. Violent disgusting bastards at their worst. I guess all I can say is that as someone who was formerly a self hating christian- I get WHY on some level the pathetic scared ones act the way they do- but they are utterly and logically in the wrong. There is no real threat at all. Though of course the looming thoughts of hell can do wonders for your perception on that sort of thing. A non-hetrosexual person is not more likely to shoot up a store or whatever- nor automatically gets access to guns by being given them for free on every street corner no matter if they actually want them or not.

So homophobes etc have an IMAGINED threat to go on, x-men in their universe a real one which still really sucks but is more understandable in the fact for them it is an immediate physical threat in some cases.

Thank you for bringing intelligence back to the thread.

+100

This is also why I was bothered by True Blood's attempts to draw a parallel between "vampire rights" and real world minority rights. They've definitely moved away from that idea being legitimate, but it definitely bugged in the first few seasons. Like, yeah, actually, humans had every right to fear and hate vampires, given that even the "good" vamps on the show have all killed someone over the course of the show.

Hell.while I wasn't hot on True Blood's execution from what I saw on it (just the first couple of episodes then I could never find it again), I thought the -concept- in general was interesting enough on its own without parallels. I mean we have a VAMPIRE story which isn't high fantasy OR an urban fantasy where vampires are one big secret. That's not the usual way with vamp stories. Humans know they exist and that's really interesting by itself. WHEN they were found out the truth- be it very recent (which True blood was right? Or am I wrong?) or way in the past could make all the difference and really shape society or its reactions in an interesting way. And unlike real life bigotry- people have reason to be scared. Vampires also have every reason to feel a bit bitter about the card they were dealt. They can't help it even if they're dangerous. But in the end they're still dangerous and fact is- there are those willing to abuse their powers.

You don't always have to draw parallels with real life problems to make a story interesting or characters relate-able . There IS something to be said about people like X-men who can't help it as well as vampires who well, aren't evil and yet apparently kill people- that would be freaky and scary to be. They can still be understandable. I honestly think the whole idea of x-men and vampires which aren't a big secret is great enough on its own when you think on it. Lots of potential there.

But it's just not a good idea to draw direct parallels with real world discrimination when you're dealing with people who control the weather or people who suck human blood.
