Agreed. It would kind of go against the whole theme of the game to all of a sudden say, "oops just kidding about you being doomed from the start and somehow still choosing your own fate to save the world. There was a undo button all along and everyone can have peaches and ice cream now instead."

Persona 3 was all about dealing with loss. Retconning so the other characters don't lose MC breaks that theme. I think this breaking with the game's original theme is similar to the reason that so many people don't like X-2.
