Asatru? (And general neo-paganism)

(Anonymous) 2012-10-24 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Backstory: My great-grandmother and grandmother were both heathens and passed on a lot of their traditions to me. My immediate family are evangelical xtians and while they're not openly hostile to other religions I never felt comfortable breaking away while I lived with them. I had an alter up for a while and got a lot of "oh are you doing your weird pagan stuff again?" flack.

Now I'm at a point in my life where I can actively practice something that calls to me, but I don't know where to begin. I'm a queer POC and I know that while plenty of heathen organizations are very inclusive, there's also the fuckwad racist branches (as there are in any religion). I know Wotanism is white-supremacist, but what about the organizations who advertise themselves as being inclusive? Like the Troth?

And, does anyone have any blog / tumblr / LJcomm / etc. recs for Asatru, Seidr, or even general pagan or wiccan stuff?

Have you considered that if you're picking and choosing your religion like a new flat, you may as well give it all up anyway.

Find something else to channel that touchy feely spiritual nonsense into.

I'm not picking and choosing my religion. I'm trying to practice the same religion I've followed since I was a kid, just openly rather than hiding it away.

Check out The Wild Hunt - it's an online newsletter for pagans, heathens and the like.

I'm confused by what it is you're calling "heathens" and "heathen organizations". I have no idea what you mean by that.

Its just sort of a catch-all name for norse paganism.

Thank you. I've seen pagan as a catch-all but I'm afraid I've only seen "heathen" used as an insult (usually meaning non-Christian) so I was a little confused.

I'm currently practicing Asatru with no guidance whatsoever other than a few books, so unfortunately I have no links for you. But if you find anything, I would be love to hear about it.

I can say that Asatru and the Troth are NOT exclusive. They welcome anyone. You might encounter one or two assholes, but in general they're good people. However, Asatru does place large emphasis on ancestors and it tends to snarl up the wording of certain rituals when your ancestry is not especially Nordic. But it's a very rewarding religion with great history. It gets characterized as a "racist" religion, but it really, REALLY isn't.

Just better not worship Loki and try to join the Troth. Some people there are great about it, but there's still a huge number of dickbags that will suggest you deserve a bloodeagle.

Stop ~~appropriating~~ a religion that doesn't belong to you, tbqh that's very privileged of you POC.

Is this sarcasm? I can't tell.

I am reallly hoping it's sarcasm. It seems a little TOO offensive to be anything else. Even trolls usually show SOME subtlety.

Double tildes, and calling them privileged and PoC within four words.

(probably sarcasm)

Most people on the planet would not be able to practice any of the major world religions if they could only practice one that "belonged" to them.

http://www.asatru.ca/ This is Canadian based but there is a lot of information. It may not be relevant to where you are geographically but check out the links and media sections. It's a starting point anyway. :)

...Why not just call them christians? Xtians makes it sound like a weird religion, and well...there's nothing wrong with the word 'christ' particularly since it applies here without taking anything away from anyone else.

That said, I can't really point you to any groups - I haven't been a part of that scene in a long time, and all the groups I knew of were local...but I do strongly recommend taking a good luck at what they say they believe in. Some groups won't base it on race, but on if you have any ~ancestors~ from where ever, regardless of skin tone.

xtian is shorter to write than christian

But confusing

(Anonymous) 2012-10-25 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I've ever seen anyone use "xtian" before, but I've seen "xian" a lot (which makes more sense, etymologically).

"Xian" had me bewildered for ages. I thought it was something in Chinese.

Avoid anything described as "folkish." Avoid the Asatru Folk Assembly. Unless you are of Celtic or Norse decent, they don't believe you should practice Asatru. You can learn about it, but have no right to practice it. My ass is white as white can be, but I'm not of that lineage and an AFA kindred thought I was too dark.
