Question about Japan

So, started watching Lucky Star - and the main character has been suggested to have a complex about her limited height.

Well I got to thinking that I've actually noticed this in a number of shows. Is this an actual thing in Japan? Or just another anime exclusive artifice.

Seems odd if it is a thing given the obsession with cute and such.

I've seen it in Western media more than anything, albeit primarily with male characters.

You don't have to be Japanese to have a complex about a height disability, you just have to be short.

If you aren't short, just try to imagine what it might feel like for one day. Whether you happen to live in Japan or not isn't a factor.
