I would say it's more of his batshit insane kill-everyone-for-fun Loki character strikes a chord with a lot of people who find that kind of thing hot.

(god i love my crazy villains, and i especially love my crazy villains extra crazy)

I'd argue that Loki doesn't really have the true "'cause it's fun" motivation in the vein of Heath Ledger's Joker, Clockwork Orange's Alex, or Richard from Looking for Group. He seems to mainly want revenge for imagined slights and to be the one in power.

The "cause it's fun" comes more into play in the comics, but a lot of the fans of movie!Loki don't really follow the comics, so you probably have a point here.

I think that's the way he comes across in Thor, but in Avengers I definitely got kind of a Heath-Ledger-Joker vibe, actually. It's part of why I kind of liked the guy in Thor, but freaking LOVED him in Avengers. He seemed like we was in it almost entirely for the lulz.

Obviously people have different interpretations, though, so I get that most may not see it that way.

I could watch that sequence of Loki being a disruptive little brat in Stuttgart and randomly smacking and killing people while snottily mincing around to Schumann on insta-repeat for an hour straight, ngl ;)
