Silly me, I tend to think that a bottom is someone who actually bottoms, someone who takes the submissive or masochistic headspace over the course of an evening, afternoon, or weekend. I'm a bottom when I put on my collar and my slave name. (And I don't in most relationships.) Unless we're explicitly in that headspace, we're engaged in a dance among equals. Having something in my ass doesn't make me your bottom, much less your bitch, sissy, boy, or toy.

I find it curious. I used to dabble in the D/s lifestyle, but in those years "sub" was the correct term for a submissive and "bottom" was indeed just something you called the passive role (usually in gay couples, not necessarily related to anal). Maybe local groups really have a different vocabulary, but personally I'd never use sub/bottom interchangeably, and I'm better some others here don't either.

I think assuming that any form of sex has a passive role is likely assuming too much about what we do in bed.

AYRT

Hmm, I generally do not assume much. If anything, I assume that people are capable of being versatile until proven otherwise. However, to say that some people do not have strong inclinations one way or the other is simply untrue. My ex was pretty much as bottom as they come (and sub too, for that matter). That doesn't mean we weren't equals in the relationship, however it did mean that in bed there were pretty distinct roles.Maybe not a 100 percent of the time, but 95 percent of the time. And there's nothing wrong with having a strong inclination (though it seems that, in fandom, it's become bad to dare and say this). I also do not think it's wrong to enjoy a certain dynamic between a certain couple, unless you start insisting it's the "one true way" that that couple works.

Of course, sexual diversity is wonderful and manifold. However the question is 1) none of your fucking business and 2) almost always based on deeply homophobic stereotypes.

Oh, if you're talking about a real couple, I absolutely agree it's none of our fucking business. However, if we're talking about fandom, shippers gonna ship, and theyre going to have their specific fantasies about what people do and how they'd do it.
