I saw this musical in, like, second grade, and was convinced that at the end EVERYONE GOT MARRIED. My mother was of the opinion that... Barnaby? Was he the younger one? The younger of the two shop guys and the hat shop assistant were too young to get married. What do you think?

Idk, I love Hello Dolly but it's so self-contained that I don't really see what would attract a fandom. Mostly fandoms happen bc there's an ongoing canon, or because there were lots of places to fill in or go 'what if?'. I would definitely read a good HD fic, but I'm not sure what it would be about....

Eh, I like the songs, but it's not much of a story and I don't see how it's a happy ending for Dolly and the other guy because they don't seem to care about each other that much?

And good god I CANNOT stand Barbara Streisand

Well, part of it is probably something to do with the time period it was based in. During that time period you didn't marry for love - you married to improve you/your families social and economic positions. And Dolly marrying Horace was pretty much that. He had plenty money, and Dolly had connections that could help me both economically and socially out the wazoo, but not so much on the money department judging from the look we get at her apartment. I'm not saying she was church mouse poor, but marrying Horace was definitely a step up in the finances for her.

You could make a case that they were portraying a typical marriage of the time, actually. Yes, Dolly does 'ask' her deceased husband for a sign - but she asks so she's sure it's the 'right thing to do', not because she says she loves Horace. She also stats that it won't be like her marriage to her first husband, which was a love match. Iirc, it's mostly the same for him. He's not looking for love - he's looking for a 'good woman', and he realizes that's what she is, more than he falls in love with her. The 'Love Is Only Love' song, and him admitting he'd be bored without her always came across as either forced or more or less admitting it wasn't 'love' - at least in the romantic sense. But that was just my opinion so ymmv. -shrugs-

tl;dr: Their happy ending is more that they found the type of marriage they want [which was the more traditional one for their time] than it was they found someone they loved.

My interpretation is that Dolly and Horace both knew exactly what they were getting into and did it anyway, so I'm going to assume they were okay with the results. And it kept Horace from marrying some girl half his age he could bully into dumping the ashes, cleaning the stable, cleaning the drain in the sink, milking the Guernsey, etc.
