If You're Writing something...

[personal profile] morieris 2012-10-27 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell me how you found the name(s) of your main characters.

As for me, I was simply reading Game Informer and came across an article written by someone whose name I fell in love with instantly.

I steal the names of characters played by my favourite actors in their various movies/tv shows.

I use place-maker names until I hit the end, and then use find and replace to name them something more suitable. (Ah, Maude. You've starred in so many things...)

I'm not writing now, but I've lately named my dolls using thinkbabynames.com. It's really awesome because you can type in a sound or a quality and it will give you a bunch of names that have that sound or mean or are associated with that quality. Like type in "courage" and it will give you a list of names meaning courage or associated with a courageous person.

I don't. I can't name my characters. I don't think I even named my dolls when I was a child.
How weird is that?

Behind the Name's random function. Or occasionally other randomizers, too.

I just picked the title of a song I really like. I am so unimaginative. :(

I just like the name of my protagonist, and my other names aren't set in stone. It's set in modern day, though, so none of the names are unusual. Except the Korean character, whose name I stole from my friend's name (whoops). And it's a screenplay, so everything's changeable.

Now for the fantasy novel I want to eventually write, I have no idea.

I wander around BehindTheName or, if I'm looking for something a bit different, the Medieval Names Archive (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/).

Google mostly, but I also dug up some in a name book, and one of my RP characters has the name of a character from an obscure fantasy novel. I usually pick them based on meaning, though.

I try to go on those sites with lists of names from all sorts of places and go through them until I find something that seems to fit. I spent a lot of time on BehindTheName and sites like that trying to name my NaNo characters this year.

i used to go through name books and pick names with meanings i felt defined important pieces of the characters, but now i just pick names i happen to like the sound of.

For my redneck exorcist character, I wanted something really hillbilly, but I didn't want to go with the obvious name of Bubba ('cause that's his cat's name). Eventually I settled on Billy Roy Jenkins, because it sounds kind of like Leeroy Jenkins, which is fun to say. His girlfriend, Eula, was much easier to name by comparison. I decided on it when I was watching the "Lester's 'Possum Park" scene from A Goofy Movie. "This here's Buford, Eula and Mordecai!" It just seemed fitting. Billy Roy's brother, Jethro, was named after the Beverly Hillbillies character, and Jethro's boyfriend Albert was so named because I wanted to throw a more "normal" name in there to shake things up.

Also, Billy Roy has a demonic imp coworker/friend named Glagthorn, which is just a nonsense word I came up with. In the story it's also the name of a bush that grows in hell which produces delicious berries that give you explosive diarrhea.

Tl;dr: rednecks are fun to name.

I usually use a theme that addresses one of the themes (major or minor) of the work in question in some way. Once I figure out what that theme is going to be, it's usually pretty easy to make them up.

Most of the time, I use a baby names book my parents got when they had my eldest sister. It's pretty basic, but it works for most things. I usually go to behindthename for international names (I needed a middle name for a Czech character) and to see the popular names for a given historical period.

Chose names I liked, took names of people I knew and chose a name similar to that (Zach > Chad for example), names of people from fiction I already liked (movies, books etc.)

I'm pretty unoriginal

I'm not writing anything original, but I AM curious as to whose name at GI you love, since I read it too. :)

This was about two years ago when I was still in high school...Jaime Madigan. I couldn't even read the article properly because I was like "Madigan? That is an awesome name."

Re: If You're Writing something...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds a bit like "mad again." I hope it's your character's surname, since it's meant to be a surname, not a first name. Though I did read a book as a kid with a character named Madigan (female, and it was her middle name, I think). The book was by Mary Downing Hahn, and I think the title was something about a mystery man?

It's her given name, but I've got run of the mill sites telling me it's just an extremely unpopular girl's name as well (& also that it's Hebrew, Celtic...I just don't know).

For whatever reason, I was really tired and started to go on a metallic theme-naming rampage one night. I ended up ditching most of them, but that's how the main character got his name, and it ended up contributing to the language/culture of my (alien) race.

Just...thought of them. I'm very interested in names, so I tend to have a wide selection in the back of my mind rather than consciously taking inspiration from other sources. I'm sure I've had influences, but they get stirred around in my brain too much for me to be too aware of them. I can only think of a few characters whose names I took from actual people (names only, not personalities).

I work in insurance and see hundreds of names in my paperwork every day. Mostly I stick with common first names and pick surnames from my mental "ooh that one looks interesting" list.

Re: If You're Writing something...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-28 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
I go through anthologies of historical figures, and pick something that vaguely fits the character in meaning or origin.
