Re: Feminism and Race

I've tried to communicate with them, perhaps less bluntly than I have put it here (it's a lot harder to speak so frankly when there's 20 eyes glaring your down). The overwhelming response seemed to be that I was just feeling that way because I'd been brainwashed by my culture (this was actually said in a very flowery, sugar-coated way of course; but that's what they ultimately getting at).

Ahhh, so they're the typical feminist flavored SJW then.

Are there any other feminist groups on your campus?

No, I'm afraid not. I'll just keep on doing things on my own, maybe talk to people online too. However, I do find that racist stuff is even worse online; people don't feel the need to sugarcoat it when they're not face to face with you.

I think you may need to be a little more forceful and tell them how you feel. If they don't heed it...I'm not sure.

Bleah. As others have said, being frank but polite, clear, and persistent when the topic comes up is a way to hopefully get people to think more about their assumptions. Also, is there someone, even a single person who has seemed more open, receptive, or even neutral (this group sounds like a natural groundswell for peer pressure), whom you can talk to away from the group on the topic? Knowing someone who isn't just a judgmental pair of eyes, or just anything to break up the feeling of being one against many, would be good. Also, as mentioned above, if there's a chance to lead a discussion, or to bring up the topic, that could be an opportunity to be frank in the way you want to be.

(Actually, who is bringing up Asian cultures in this group, and for what purpose? Is it to discuss recent news? Or historical changes, or movements, or stagnation of women's rights in different cultures and reasons behind them, or to expose people to different mindsets and cultural values? Or is it simply to tsk-tsk over them? If they're really trying to discuss different cultures, but it ends up on these notes... it would be an uphill slog to bring your point home, but possibly it wouldn't fall entirely on deaf ears. If it's affirmably solely the last reason, then personally I'd wonder if that group were truly offering what you need. And I'd be more in favor of being very frank of how condescending they're being.)

Although regarding that last point, you could admittedly also try to direct the group towards learning/understanding different cultures. As mentioned below, find a good essay or similar on the topic in regards to feminism.

Sorry, Saturday night's my SALT THE SCORCHED EARTH night sometimes...)
