Most workplaces are not like that. You do something you love, and would be likely be doing for fun anyway. Most workplaces, people are doing things they find fairly meaningless in and of themselves, and so they talk to their co-workers about things they're interested in.

Most jobs have at least some requirement to socialize, even in academia, and many people's social circles are at least partially based on their co-workers. I'd say your situation is the more unusual one, anon.

I do something I love and there's a lot of socializing in my work place. We have things in common beyond our shared field and that's probably because it's likely that an occupation will attract similar people. Regardless of the situation, I don't think there's anything strange about wanting to chat with the people you spend 8+ hours of your day with. That would be like refusing to ever talk to any of your neighbors.

Thanks for your comment! I just started my first job after Uni and I really don't thing my job will make the world a better place. It really seems meaningless. :(
