I'd avoid anything that tried to tear down the dude's canon female love interest for the audacity of having a vagina, whether it was a "closet" plot or not. But she could be well aware of it and love him anyway (as a BFF) or might even be in the closet herself...

I'm tired of tragic gays, too, but I'm also tired of "everyone is bisexual" because they're, well, not. A nice mix'd be I ideal, I think.

There is good fic that deals with characters being gay and closeted, so I guess it being good depends on whether the author is writing it for ~drama~ or for character/relationship exploration.
