Do you never take breaks at work? Do you not get a lunch? How is it possible that you never speak of anything that is not 100% work-related? I'm having difficulty fathoming this.

You ask why people would need to discuss non-work related stuff at work. Here's the reason: most people feel a need to develop relationships with those with whom they spend a good deal of time. Most people feel the need to make friends (and, after you've left school, the place you're most likely to make friends is at work). I would hazard a guess that, despite the nature of your work, your co-workers are probably discussing non-work related things with one another. They aren't with you because you're aloof.

By the way, I currently work in finance, and I've done time in the insurance industry, as well. I've never been in an environment where people don't chat, at least occasionally. I've also made friends with various co-workers and spend time with them outside of work. Social interaction may not be important to you because of your extremely introverted nature, but that isn't typical -- regardless of the type of job.
