I agree. I actually keep wanting to post a secret about how annoying it is that so many shows have this idea that you're automatically homophobic and racist if you're Republican, which is often expressed by a gay character being shocked to find out another gay character is Republican.

It's just- when did people come to associate Democrats with open-mindedness and Republicans with close-mindedness? It's not like people go, oh, I'm a raging homophobe, therefore I must be a Republican.

...and I don't actually associate with either party: I just grew up in a Republican household with people of pretty average tolerance for minorities and those of different sexualities.
