This is true. But there really isn't any good way out of this dilemma. The two are fundamentally at odds with each other. One values the exclusivity of their arrangement and feels the specialness is ruined by sharing, the other feels trapped by it and would resent not being able to share their ideas with others.

I know, but with clear communication it can be cleaner. Best case scenario for OP the friend decides she doesn't want OP to hurt this was/it isn't that important to her to publish the fic. Probably not going to happen, but if someone does need to get hurt, I find it's much easier to deal with it and move on when everything's out in the open. If moving on entails staying friends or not is up to OP. This is life, I suppose. I do believe communication makes pretty much everything easier, even the unpleasant emotions, but I'm poly, so I could just be addled. :P

Actually we don't know if the OP's friend feels/felt trapped, or if they forgot [or 'forgot'] their agreement with the OP, or thought that 'Well, it's really just *one* character so...' We don't know anything about what happened on their side at all really, so claiming that they would resent it, or that they feel/felt any given way doesn't really work.

It could be something as simple as 'Well, since it wasn't actually what we plotted/wrote, just about character X/something else happening in that universe, I'm sure OP won't mind it/it's okay to share!' without them realizing that it was going to upset the OP. It does happen. It could also be exactly what you said, but we really just don't have enough information to really make that call. [And really, it's kind of a moot point since the OP obviously doesn't intend to go back to it.]
