I'm pretty sure that I'm a souless monster because Moffat has never once made me tear up or feel any real kind of sadness. I really have no idea where he gets his reputation for being so tragic.

The only Doctor Who epiosde that has made me full on cry was "Father's Day". I tear up during Doomsday and Journey's End a bit. Oh! And I teared up with John Smith in "Family of Blood". But Moffat didn't have anything to do with any of those stories.

I don't get it either. He never really kills anyone. In fact sometimes I wish he'd use the death-hammer more often.

You're not a soulless monster. Moffat just doesn't write convincing emotion generally, imo.

I think the only time I recall him really punching me in the gut was the end of "Forest of the Dead", where the guy who copy!Donna fell in love with and married and lived with for virtual years sees de-book-ified!Donna standing around distraught because she knows she'll never find him in the mass of bajillions of newly de-book-ified people, and he tries to call out to her, but can't get the words out due to his stutter and gets teleported away without her noticing him.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that! I'd hoped through the remainder of the series that she'd find him again.

Shit, Father's Day. Nobody warned me about Father's Day. It was all "Oh, be sure to tell me when you watch The Empty Child, I wanna be sure to watch it with you and clutch your hand in terror," and I thought Empty Child was great but no gas-mask zombies could possibly be scary to me coming off the legit fucking Twilight Zone shit in Father's Day. And then after I was done shitting bricks Paul Cornell made me cry buckets. Not fair.

So yeah, Father's Day is a guaranteed kleenex episode. So are Parting of the Ways and The Big Bang, mostly because both showrunners just had to go and make their first series finales all about Their Feeeeelings About The Show Leaving Them. The Doctor's Wife, School Reunion, and Forest of the Dead can also catch me depending on my mood. Those aren't even necessarily the episodes I have the most feelings about; it says less about the writers and more about how reliable my tear triggers are. ("Such a big word, and so sad when it's over." BAM.)

Oooh. I forgot about The Parting of the Ways. That one gets me too. Billie Piper has an uncanny ability to make me cry. Like I didn't even LIKE series 4 of Secret Diary of a Call Girl and I was a crying mess during the finale.

I have this theory that people either tend to respond to the way RTD does emotion, or the way Moffat does it, but usually not to both.* No idea why, but it does seem to hold true.

(This being the internet, I may well now be deluged by people who find both Moffat and RTD tugs on their heart strings. But I kind of suspect not).

* On the other hand, Paul Cornell, who wrote both Father's Day and Family of Blood, seems to have fans in both camps. I'm much more of a Moffat fan than an RTD fan, but I found both Cornell episodes you mention very moving.
