i would love some ya book recs! i feel like i haven't read an actual book in a good long while, and i'd like to dip my toe back in with some young adult fiction. the last books i read (and enjoyed) were "anna and the french kiss" and "lola and the boy next door" by stephanie perkins, but i also remember loving sarah dessen's books and the first three in the jessica darling series by megan mccafferty, so i'm looking for something in this vein. just anything funny and cute i suppose. thanks in advance!

(also!! side note, but if you know of any books, ya or otherwise, that you feel were particularly good about representing queer characters i would be much obliged!)

While it's not a young adult book, its fantasy I am in the middle of the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling which has, at the center, a gay couple as the main protagonists.

I enjoyed the House of Night series by PC Cast (although it does have moments of humor, it is more on the angsty side) and there are queer characters in the series.

I love Rick Riordan, too. Any of his series are enjoyable.

Larklight by Philip Reeve is a fantastic YA steampunk/space travelling story, but it can be hard to find in the States. I eventually just ordered a copy off Amazon. I don't think it's in e-book yet, but that may have changed since I last checked.

Meg Cabot's Mediator series is loads of fun. It's about a girl named Suze who can see, talk to and beat up ghosts.

Libba Bray's Gemma Doyle trilogy is not particularly well-written, but I adored it and it's LGBT-friendly. It's about a Victorian-era girl who is sent to a girls' boarding school, where she discovers her magical heritage and powers. I promise it's not a (total) Harry Potter rip-off.

Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching series is fantastic, as his his standalone book, The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents.

The Theatre Illuminata trilogy, by Lisa Mantchev, is about a girl who lives in a theatre where all of the characters from every play ever written also live. It's a lot of fun.

Malinda Lo's Ash is basically a lesbian retelling of Cinderella with a bit of a twist. Her follow-up, Huntress, isn't nearly as good, though.

Finally, Jim C. Hines' Princess series isn't YA, but it's definitely LGBT-positive and worth a look. The first book, The Stepsister Scheme, is about Danielle (Cinderella) having to rescue her prince from the hands of her wicked stepsisters with the help of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Amy and Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson. Trust me.
