Look, I don't like the pacing of this Jones arc either, but he seems like a cool dude. Why do you say he's a douche?

If the reason anon thinks Tom is a douche is because of this Jones chapter I'm gonna cry blood or something. Man, I don't even know why I bother reading the comments on the latest pages; not only are people acting like Tom is scamming/trolling them with this chapter, but now they're leaning towards making a racial issue out of it too.

Sorry, not directed at you, anon I'm replying to, just wanted to vent.

ayrt- I hope it's not the reason. I was half-venting too because this chapter made its point weeks ago. And I can see he's using each page to work on his art and link readers to significant points in history, which is nice -- but it's killing the pacing. Gunnerkrigg is becoming one of those comics I'd rather come back and read after a few months. Maybe it's because I just read all the archives earlier this year.

That sucks about the commenters though. It's why I avoid them. D:

Not long after I posted my comment I found this one that sums up a lot of my feelings

"yeah, why would you write a story detailing the life of an immortal character in a way that really makes you feel the length of her life and isolation, when you can just write one sentence saying “She is immortal” on a piece of paper and shove it up your ass"

I don't think he's doing just for practice or to show off, I think it all has a narrative purpose. Plus, the only reason it feels so long and dragging is because it only updates one page three times a week. Once the chapter is done and people can reread it in a sitting, I think they'll be able to really appreciate it.

Oh, I saw the race issue coming the second I saw the latest page. I don't get how she is immortal, has the image of humans, and somehow pre-dates the first humans who were African and not Caucasian. IDK.

I've been :S about the race issue too but given Tom Sidell's usual attention to detail I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt for now and assuming there's a reasonable explanation for it.

In the mean time I'm assuming her physical appearance has changed over time and we're just being shown her modern look because it's what we'll recognise..

Hopefully he'll have a reason. If she goes passed the time Caucasians evolved and is dancing around with the dinosaurs as a very European looking woman I'll cringe.

Andddd she's alive far beyond the birth of humans with very European features. I think Tom dropped the ball with this one.

Well it's possible she's a time-traveller, as some people have suggested. It does seem strange to me that he'd miss something like this, given how much research has clearly gone in to this arc, but maybe I am giving him too much credit.

This a thousand times over.

One thing I will say, one of my friends mentioned a while ago that he stopped reading Gunnerkrigg Court because it doesn't read well as a webcomic, it reads smoother as an actual comic, reading an entire chapter at a time rather than a page every couple days. I still read every update because I'm impatient, but I think I will eventually buy them in physical form. Its format just works better.

Yes, it's a good story, but stories like this don't do so well as webcomics.
