Notes:

To the anon that wanted warnings on .gif secrets: I'm not sure how I could effectively implement that. For triggery or spoilery secrets, one could just not read the text, but for .gifs by the time you get to the warning, it's already moving in your field of vision. If you have a suggestion as to how it could be done without just linking the secret (it's not breaking any rules or containing porn or gore, so that wouldn't be fair), let me know. Putting it in the notes for now.

16 is a .gif, by the way.

Regarding the GIF warning person, was the issue with all gifs, or just potentially seizure-inducing ones?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-02 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone said before that you can hold down the escape key and they stop moving. I have awful vertigo and that's what I do. I think just posting "Secret #X has a gif" is more than fair warning. But it also feels like we may be sending Case down a slippery slope by asking him to do it? Seems like he does enough work already to maintain this comm.

Not vertigo anon-

Thank you for the really cool tip!

Maybe, but at the same time stuff that's actually bad enough to be an epilepsy trigger could send a person to the hospital. I've never seen anyone submit one, but if they did I don't think it'd be unreasonable to ask that it be warned for and/or behind a cut for safety's sake.

For gifs in general... IDK, that's Case's call.

I am vertigo!anon and certain .gifs are enough to make me physically ill and send me lurching for a toilet so I can throw up. I don't have to go to the hospital but because of what the nature of my vertigo it is caused by the neurons in my brain misfiring (at least part of it) so it isn't something that I can control easily.

Then they can hit esc every time they come here. That's a reasonable thing for them to do. Hopefully they see that hint above so they don't have to worry anymore.

Esc key does nothing for me :(

Are you using Firefox?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-02 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi! I am vertigo!anon - it is all unanticipated movement because I can't tell already what is moving and what isn't (let me tell you that certain kinds of shirts and shower curtains will set me off on a not good day). So when I get unanticipated movement it makes the already constant feeling of being on a boat worse and more roller coasterish.

When I am at home checking F!S it isn't a problem because I have set up Firefox to automatically disable gifs from moving. However for most of the week, I check F!S on my phone at work. And Unfortunately I have not figured out how to get the .gifs to stop moving from that and I've already played stump the tech with Verizon on that.

As one person suggested a little warning that this secret submission has gifs above the first secret is enough (and on the LJ mirror) and I will just wait until I get home to check F!S but because I do love to comment while things are fresh if I can. If that is not possible, I understand. I've already set up certain filters to block those friends who seem incapable of understanding that moving gifs should be under a LJ Cut. So long as the first secret isn't a moving .gif I shouldn't have to do that with F!S.

I just know that I can't be the only person out there with Vertigo so I am speaking up.

Thanks!

I have vertigo. Gifs don't seem to trigger it for me for the most part, though some do. Mine tends to be triggered more by movement than visuals anyway. Plus, I'm on meds that seem to help somewhat. Mine is an inner ear problem, though, not a brain thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I wish mine had been inner ear. I went through 4 different doctors including one of the best in the country before someone figured out "Hey! It's her brain! It really is broken!" and then it took six more months before they realized it was more than one thing causing the vertigo. I'm on meds now and they help some and I am slowly getting better. And I've gone to physical therapy to relearn how to walk and function for the most part. But movement and moving pictures tend to set me off. Watching movies at the theater is hard. Seeing plays is hard. Riding in cars is hard. Driving is right out.

I can trigger myself just by looking straight ahead at a fixed point and shaking my head for less than a minute (one of my PT exercises).

Fun times.

That sucks. I had mine all through my childhood without knowing it. I didn't get diagnosed until college. Mine is triggered by walking or turning my head or sitting up real fast. And cars and planes. Planes are the worst. They used to be absolute torture for me before I got on meds.

I do have really bad periods where I can trigger myself like that and I just have to lay there doing nothing. It makes having a head cold lots of fun.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yours doesn't sound like any fun either. BPPV?

Planes aren't too bad for me, except for the massive banking that they do on take off/landing. I am generally okay.

Why is it that being sick makes this infinitely worse? I know that when I'm sick the whole thing just ramps up to an eleven and I am like "Dude, I'm already coughing my lungs out I don't need to feel like I'm on a tilt-a-whirl while doing it."

Thanks for listening.
