Notes:

To the anon that wanted warnings on .gif secrets: I'm not sure how I could effectively implement that. For triggery or spoilery secrets, one could just not read the text, but for .gifs by the time you get to the warning, it's already moving in your field of vision. If you have a suggestion as to how it could be done without just linking the secret (it's not breaking any rules or containing porn or gore, so that wouldn't be fair), let me know. Putting it in the notes for now.

16 is a .gif, by the way.

Are people now using the word "trigger" as synonymous with "anxiety" or "nervousness"? Because for some of the examples you gave (homework, commenters) that's what it sounds like.

I've seen someone who had a trigger warning on a fic for hair-cutting. So, yeah. The meaning has basically been taken away.

... Well, between this and someone trigger warning for calories elsewhere, now I've heard everything.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-11-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, calories is a pretty typical and valid warning in eating disorder circles. I could easily see someone who frequents those types of comms carrying over the habit of warning for them into other areas and not even thinking about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-02 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen a 'fire' trigger hissyfit. Over a post about gas stoves vs electric.

Yeah, triggering has gotten a little silly in some cases.

That's what google image search is for folks!

Makes it easy to respond though.

One of my vegan friends (there's a vegetarian/vegan club at my school) chewed someone out for not posting a trigger warning for meat when he put up a photo of a birthday party. The O.o emoticon pretty much perfectly represents my face.

If someone has an ED, that's pretty valid. People with EDs are extraordinarily sensitive (it's very much tied up with brain chemistry and feelings of inadequacy) and an episode can be triggered by pretty much anything related to food, weight, or appearance.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2012-11-03 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
My apologies. I wasn't aware of that, but thank you for letting me know why that's considered a trigger.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-03 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's completely okay. There's a reason ED sufferers need psychological help to get over their disorders. I agree with the comments a lot of people have been making that, except for highly traumatic events, you have to learn to deal with your triggers.

seeing this comment in flat view, I thought ED was erectile dysfunction

Echoing the above comment, it's not even just that calorie talk can affect people with EDs, it's that EDs are the form of mental illness that is most likely to kill or permanently injure someone. So even though not very many people are triggered by calorie talk, they may be more badly affected by their triggers than anyone else. I've been blogging a bit about eating for health and weight loss and I cut EVERYTHING for that reason.

I don't want to get too specific, but child abuse has led me to get triggered, as in full-on flashback triggered, by such seemingly innocuous things as hair-cutting, unfinished homework and the smell of barbeque sauce. But like someone else put farther down, I'm a fucking adult and my ridiculous triggers are nobody else's concern. I appreciate warnings, but I'm not about to demand the Internet reconfigure itself to my needs.

This. I'm triggered by Rod Stewart but I don't expect radio stations to change for me.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
da

I'm triggered by cooking shows, conversations about Mother's Day or Father's Day, and people who yell at their TV.

THIS so much. A LOT of people with PTSD have triggers that to others are seemingly completely random. It's not fair to the rest of the world to magically expect them to read our minds!

(Anonymous) 2012-11-02 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I'm thinking lately. I'd even go as far and say they use it when they feel mild discomfort.

Yes, or for even simple dislike. It's been going on for years really, and why it can be rather trying to have a conversation about them when someone's first impression of them is that of a joke.

Yes. Yes, they are. The conflation of discomfort with mental illness is getting kinda absurd. That really is it - some people act like they're entitled to comfort at all times and they steal the language of trauma support groups to enforce that wish.
