Notes:

To the anon that wanted warnings on .gif secrets: I'm not sure how I could effectively implement that. For triggery or spoilery secrets, one could just not read the text, but for .gifs by the time you get to the warning, it's already moving in your field of vision. If you have a suggestion as to how it could be done without just linking the secret (it's not breaking any rules or containing porn or gore, so that wouldn't be fair), let me know. Putting it in the notes for now.

16 is a .gif, by the way.

THANK YOU!

Every time I see him in fic as having no idea how to use technology, I want to scream and ask if they were paying attention in the movie. He was using the tablet on the jet, he knew how to use that table-screen thing, and when he was looking at Peggy's phone number in the cutscene, he looked to the phone, a very modern landline.

And that's before we get into all the race and gender type stuff. >.

To be fair, we never actually see him use the tablet, he's just holding it. For all we know Coulson might have done all the set up and just handed it to him. He also assumed Wifi had something to do with radios and generally seemed uncomfortable with modern life throughout the deleted scene. And honestly, having him adjust overnight, no problem, to the 21st century would be rather boring.

I'm sort of baffled that so many people complain about Steve being written as a man out of time when it's an endearing trait that most ficcers use for fun or angst. I wish people would complain about him being written as a homophobe/sexist/racist more often. THAT is both gross and very OOC.

I like that because I love seeing popular characters being awkward with modern technology, because I still don't know how to post links or pictures on this website. And Chris Evans has such a baby-face that seeing him confused just makes me go all melty and mothering inside. Although, as a panromatic asexual woman, the homophobia, sexism, and racism just does not fly and as soon as one of the protagonists start to show those traits, it's straight to the back button.

Thanks!

(Funny story, I used to live in Tarpey Village, across the street from the city he did.)

we never actually see him use the tablet, he's just holding it. For all we know Coulson might have done all the set up and just handed it to him.

True, but I feel like it was depicted that way purposefully: like, Fury makes a big deal of bringing him the paper, hardcopy files of information, everything in the gym he works out in is very old fashioned, even the clothes we see him in at the end speak to SHIELD kind of just...coddling him a little on the present day stuff (to say nothing of the end of Captain America). But in that moment, for whatever reason, the director/screenwriter/whoever chose to depict him handling a piece of technology way beyond anything he could have imagined, and he doesn't appear especially baffled by it. He indicates that he's been "reading up" on Bruce, which makes it seem to me like he's been something of an active participant in using the tablet? Or at least doing research some other way. So while there's definitely no definitive proof of him being able to adjust to technology super well, it's not definitive proof otherwise.
(As for the "wireless" thing, I give him some leeway because in his world that's what "wireless" meant, like it was something he recognized and tried to build a connection to.)

I think part of problem is, though, we have no idea how much time has elapsed between the end of Captain America and the start of The Avengers; I figure some at least because of his "Trying to get me out in the world again?", like it may be something Fury's tried before, but he hasn't been on the Helicarrier yet and Coulson's still in freak out fanboy mode, so it can't have been too long.

Agreed. Also, given the kind of military operations he was used to--ie giving him frigging superpowers--technology can't be all that baffling to him just by existing.

Just don't ask him to fix it or do anything fancy.

Yeah, and even if it's all new to him, he was a soldier, and he and the Commandos basically had to snatch up up Zola's weird tesseract-powered HYDRA weapons and go "LOL WHAT DOES THIS DO?" "IDK PAL PUSH THAT BUTTON" "HOT DIGGITY THAT WORKED POINT IT AT THAT NAZI NOW" while they were busy fleeing enemy troops in the dark.

So. Technology. Not something he's gonna freak out over. He's probably pissed off that the future still doesn't have jetpacks and has only one airship and thinks Tony a loser for not figuring out how to complete Howard's flying car.

Wifi does use radio waves. :)

/haven't seen the movie to know the context of his concept of wifi
