Notes:

To the anon that wanted warnings on .gif secrets: I'm not sure how I could effectively implement that. For triggery or spoilery secrets, one could just not read the text, but for .gifs by the time you get to the warning, it's already moving in your field of vision. If you have a suggestion as to how it could be done without just linking the secret (it's not breaking any rules or containing porn or gore, so that wouldn't be fair), let me know. Putting it in the notes for now.

16 is a .gif, by the way.

I think I get what you're saying. It's kind of like in the forties where they would have morally questionable heroes and then the fifties came and most heroes started becoming squeaky clean.

I get that, in general, we as a society go through trends. Heck, just compare previous eras of writing to our own today. It's not even character types of story forms but also just general word choice, grammar, pacing.

However, the writer and consumer in me is a little upset by it because what I like isn't considered "adult". I just wish we could go through trends without shitting on those who aren't popular right now.

But yeah, it is interesting. I think that too.

Oh, same! I personally love Steve and I don't think he's boring at all. He has a lot of character and flaws and he just genuinely is a good person despite everything. It's unfair that people think that a protagonist who wants to be a good person is 'boring', because they're not. (Well, they can be, but just as much as any other character type). It's like people are stuck back in the past where a genuinely good character is default and to be expected, and thus simplistic, whereas anything else is so original and edgy and thoughtful, even though that hasn't been the case for ages.

(A similar thing is happening to Thor - though his flaws are more apparent because his movie was about overcoming them, a lot of people see his straightforward and cheerful persona as being boring, too. Idk why, I love Thor).

And I saw your comment above about the endings to your plays and that made me D:. Trends are fine and good and inescapable, but when writers are feeling stifled by them it's frustrating. Just because an ending is happy doesn't mean it's not deep, and just because an ending is unhappy doesn't mean it's automatically superior.

Yeah, that fact that people don't realize Steve has flaws kind of irks me. Sometimes I feel people don't look at Steve and judge him. They look at the idea of Steve and judge that. Not always, there are people who don't like him and I'm cool with that. It's just sometimes I have to sit there and wonder if we're talking about the same character, you know?

Yes, this. I think it's a generational thing. The baby boomers are still in power and they were the ones who got sick and tired of the constant "good hero" character. From their perspective, I completely understand too. If I didn't have constant "jerk heroes" at all in my childhood and had to deal with only "good heroes" I would probably have a similar reaction and aversion. What I don't get are the kids who were born in the nineties and after. They had a whole bunch of "jerk heroes" to choose from. Maybe the feelings from the baby boomers have bled over?

(I love Thor too and think he is quite complex. In fact, one of my favorite fics was from Thor's perspective. He was very smart but was dealing with learning a new culture and having to learn new customs while not everyone understood his problem. I was really interesting.)

Yeah, I literally gave the same play in twice, unaltered except for the ending, and the happy ending one got people condemning it as childish while the sad ending had people praising me on how deep and meaningful and stuff it was. I was just :| So I really don't bother with happy endings anymore. It's restricting but I'll live. Maybe things will change in a few years.

Just because an ending is happy doesn't mean it's not deep, and just because an ending is unhappy doesn't mean it's automatically superior.

You're preaching to the choir.

Oooh, can I have a link to this?

I can't seem to find it. All I know is that it was recced here on F!S in response to a Thor secret about how Thor wasn't an idiot. He didn't know a lot because of cultural differences but wasn't stupid. The secret was upset about fandoms portrayal of him.

Damn. That is the secret I was thinking of... but not the rec. I checked all the responses to the secret and couldn't find it. It was an actual fic. Now I wonder where I read it... so weird.

Thank you for finding the secret, anon.

You're welcome. Now I'm intrigued too. I wonder if there's an Avengers/MCU fic finding comm?
