Not OP, but I think that's what weired me too from the Ghibli's movies (Shintoism/Japanese mythology/concepts). That's sorta what happened me with "Leafie, A Hen Into The Wild" too. If a Korean friend of mine didn't mentioned it to me before, I wouldn't had spotted the North Korea vs South Korea conflict in the movie.

Oh, shut up. Being unable to catch nuanced cultural allegories in fiction is not the same as not being open to other cultures.

Oh shut up. I'm Southeast Asian and non-Christian and still some of Ghibli movies are hard for me to grasp because of those concepts. Doesn't make them bad movies but still.

I remember people tittering about that movie and the "Bishi ducks". Then I actually watched it, and it's actually very sad. It reminded me quite a bit of stories like Black Beauty, Watership Down, Plague Dogs, and the novel of Bambi.
