Sorry, I can't help you. I seriously don't see how a penis or a vagina can make a difference in a threesome if the characters work together.

I technically don't see it either, but I've never come across a M/M/M OT3 I liked. Or a F/F/F one either, for that matter, and I think it does have to do with the characters' gender for me, it's not just coincidental. But maybe I'm just not thinking hard enough...

Could it have something to do with the 'canon threesomes' (two male best friends liking the same girl, one girl torn between two exciting guys etc.) that is so common everywhere?

I have several M/M/M ships I like, but those are all in canons where I SHIP ALL THE MAIN CHARACTERS like One Piece. And it makes perfectly harmonic sense to me. But I do ship more M/F/M pairings, but that's only because M/F/M is a common character gender combination in the stories I read/watch/play.

That ought to make sense, but actually most of my OT3s are "couple I love + person who has UST-y vibes with them", not "love triangle". I think the only love triangle OT3 I like is Buffy/Spike/Angel (and for crack, Archie/Betty/Veronica). Usually I go for stuff like Marshall/Ted/Lily and Clark/Lois/Bruce and Harry/Ron/Hermione and James/Lily/Sirius and Pepper/Tony/Natasha (why this last one is so rare mystifies and saddens me, btw). And even those I'm totally idiosyncratic if it seems like the girl is just there because she's in a relationship with Guy A, not because she has potential with Guy B.

I'm usually very, very neutral about gender in fiction too, so this is kind of weird for me.

Yeah, that is weird if you're usually very neutral to gender in fiction. Could it have something to do with there not being many canon M/M or F/F couples to begin with?

I have no idea, but that sounds like it might be part of it. It's harder to navigate three permutations of noncanonical Ho Yay rather than the vibes one character has for two characters who already have a canonically romantic relationship with each other.

Maybe it's because most of my fandoms don't have a lot of canon homosexual couples (my fandoms are often ones catering to male audiences)...but now that I think of it Buffy/Willow/Tara is actually pretty intriguing...

Pepper/Tony/Natasha (why this last one is so rare mystifies and saddens me, btw)

I couldn't agree more. I thought there would be a ton of fic for the three of them. They were all just sparking off each other left right and center... idk. I just don't know.

In general though, I totally agree with your approach here. I don't tend to lean toward the love triangle either. But then my fandoms tend toward giant cuddle piles from which one can happily pluck out multiple combinations and it works. lol

These are my favorite type of cast, for sure :)

Pepper/Tony/Natasha (why this last one is so rare mystifies and saddens me, btw)

Because Pepper/Tony/Steve and Pepper/Tony/Bruce are way more popular. I'm personally very pleased that Pepper seems to get in on the threesome lovin' fairly often, and I don't personally ship Pepper/Tony/Natasha because Tony/Natasha turns me off like woah. :)
intrigueing: (pretty nat)

I can't do Pepper/Tony/Bruce at all even though it's the exact setup I generally like for OT3s (couple + friend) and I love both Tony/Pepper and Tony/Bruce. Yet I've read a fic or two in which I really liked Tony/Pepper/Steve even though I don't ship Steve/Tony in the movieverse at all (although I looooove making jokes about the Ho Yay). And with Tony/Pepper/Natasha -- I like Tony/Pepper and Natasha/Pepper by themselves, but Tony/Natasha generally doesn't work for me...unless Pepper (or actually just other people in general, but especially Pepper) is involved, in which case Tony/Natasha suddenly becomes really really hot.

Shipping preferences are so fucking weird and random. Which is why shipping wars generally baffle me because it seems so much a personal taste matter that I don't get how people can seriously fight over it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Hmm...Looking at my ships, one is a love triangle, one is a best friends + a canon love interest, one is both, and one is two people pining for one person and also with delicious tension in between them. So maybe it does have something to do with the canonicity.

Actually, I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount of people who agree with me. It makes me feel less weird for not knowing why exactly my shipping preferences lie this way. It's not like a problem, I don't go "ew three men", M/M/M just doesn't resonate with me as much as a combination of M/M/F or M/F/F.

I'd be interested in Marshall/Ted/Lily recs, too...
