yeah but it's the same as any other kind of fantasy. People often love characters that they'd find repugnant in real life, and fantasize about things that would actually be awful. Doesn't mean they think it's real. Sure, some might get reality and fantasy confused, but they're the minority.

ayrt

I know they don't think they're real, but that's what makes it so much more repugnant -- trivializing something they know is wrong just because they're lazy or don't care.

ummm not really? Are people with rape fantasies repugnant? We all know and agree that rape is horrible but there are some people who find it compelling, interesting, sexy, whatever in fiction. It doesn't mean they are lazy/don't care about actual victims.

That's why it's sort of a grey line area for me between the "shipping wars" and "wow that's a racist comment" sides of the spectrum (in terms of whether you should mind your own business and not let other people's enjoyment of fandom bother you.) On one hand, I love lots of problematic characters too. And like you say, just because you like a fictional character, doesn't mean that you would have those feelings toward a RL murderer. But I can understand why some people get upset. Because some of the language used to describe Loki (etc.) can be construed as going across the line between fiction and reality, as being similar to RL murderer fangirls'.

To use your example, there is nothing wrong with someone having a rape fantasy. But if they're talking about a fictional rape scene, blaming the woman or saying that she must have enjoyed it... well maybe that doesn't reflect how they would feel about a RL woman being raped. But I can definitely see why people would see that as not an isolated fandom comment and would get upset.
