(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, yeah, sure there's tons of non-porn stuff too. But really, a major chuck is about porn. And porn is about being attracted to someone.
Hey, sometimes it's more about romance. There it's more of an emotional attraction. What gets you off emotionally? But either way, it's still a pretty base sort of thing.

That's pretty much why I read what I read. The porn-y parts make the emotional attraction better, for me, for the most part. But, yeah. I get off on the combination of emotions/sex?

...So? Obviously this isn't how the OP uses fandom so I don't get your point. It's like telling me that F!S is mostly for secrets. Well, yeah, but we also have a huge GC thread that has nothing to do with secrets.
Heck, I never read fic for porn. If it comes up in a story I scroll past. It's a legit way to experience fandom.
And while you seem to understand this point you don't seem to understand that the OP has a fear of mentioning this to people because they believe wank will happen if they do. Meaning that the OP thinks if they bring it up someone somewhere will decide that the way the OP experiences fandom is wrong and they shouldn't experience fandom that way. Heck, just the other day I had some anon telling me that lesbians couldn't be lesbians if they read manslash fic.
This isn't a secret about someone being irritated that people are shocked about how they experience fandom. It's a secret about the arguments and wank that arise when they mention how they experience fandom. Which is wrong. People should just freaking enjoy themselves and stop trying to police others unless someone is doing something illegal.
Shit, why is this complicated?

Not everyone is in fandom for porn. Nothing against people who write it, but that's not our only motivation. Also, not all shipping is porn.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)I don't know, man, but it just seems like some people absolutely cannot deal with others being different from them. If you're not doing it the way that they would do it, then you're doing it the "wrong way," because they can't step outside themselves for one second and consider that someone might feel differently.
It's the conflation of a subjective feeling with objective reality. It makes people feel uncomfortable to be confronted with the idea that they might be wrong. And I understand this. But at the same time, I'm like...why can't you just bulldoze through it, particularly for something as ultimately meaningless as fandom? The cure for cancer does not lie in shipping preferences. Man up and get over it, seriously.
I guess what really gets me is that it's everywhere. No one likes to be wrong, so they insulate themselves against the possibility. They come up with all sorts of lies and logic loops to keep from having to deal with their own fallibility. And it's infuriating, and damaging...and there's nothing to be done for it.
Gah, I'm rambling.

I don't know. I feel it's less they feel threatened by it but more, "How can you feel that way? I don't feel that way." It almost seems like they have a failure of Theory of Mind. And then get upset either by that failure or the fact the person isn't, well, them.

I mean, I mostly don't read femmeslash, but I do ship Willow/Tara and Xena/Gabrielle because I like those pairing on an emotional level, for a lack of a better word - and while I don't really go looking for porn of those pairings, I'd enjoy a well-written fic with those being the central pairings, as well as cute fanart.

I understand what you're saying. The pairings you like aren't limited by your porn preferences.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)Speak for yourself. For me, porn -- be it smutty fan-fic or the "normal" visual kind -- has nothing to do with me being attracted to someone, and everything to do with dynamics.
I've read plenty of smut fic about characters I don't find attractive. I watch a ton of porn with no one in it I find attractive. Different strokes.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)This goes for romantic and platonic fic.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-04 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)Not necessarily.
I love watching and reading lesbian porn, or porn that involves multiple women. I myself, however, am not attracted to women, and I would never sleep with a woman in real life.
I've thought about why this might be, and I've come to this conclusion: as a woman, I like watching or reading about the stimulation of my own erogenous zones. In lesbian porn, all of the naughty bits under discussion are my own naughty bits; I can realistically imagine every pleasure that the characters are experiencing. Why on earth wouldn't that get me off?
There's more to it than you seem to think, anon.

And with fic, sometimes I'll read porn about characters that I find unattractive if the porn itself is good.
