I think it's more worrisome when people make assumptions about why I don't ship certain characters. Just because I don't ship a character it doesn't mean that I hate or dislike them! I love a lot of characters who I don't ship, or whose canon romance I dislike or hate. There's no actual correlation there, people!

Also, in addition to shipping characters I find attractive I do ship characters who I don't find attractive. Or characters whose appearance I find plain or unremarkable.

I've never heard that. I avoid writing one character in my fandom since he reminds me strongly of an abusive relationship I had in my past, and people have noticed, but I've never heard "you don't ship= you hate this character".

Well, I've mostly seen it used for female characters. In later years there's been some accusations of "erasure" of female characters when slashers don't write about them. A load of crap, of course, but the notion that liking a character means you must write fanfic for them was pretty widely accepted for a while, I think.

This - it particularly worries me when they jump to the conclusion that I don't ship character X because it 'interferes' with one of my ships/I 'don't like' female characters [this actually is something a lot of people assume in one of my fandoms if you don't like the main female character that shows up, regardless of your feelings towards the rest], when it's usually either me being apathetic to the character, or just not seeing them have any romantic chemistry with anyone.

I don't think it's anything wrong with not shipping a character because it interferes with a pairing you prefer. What's the problem, exactly? It isn't a slight on the character, it only means you prefer a different pairing. You can still love a character even if you think the canon ship for them is crap.

Well, from what I've seen the reasoning behind not liking that is because a lot of the time someone who gets upset over a character who interferes with another character 'getting in the way of their ship' will flat out bash the character 'interfering', and wank on people who do ship the 'rival' ship.

Personally, I don't see why anyone *cares* if other people ship a pairing that involves one of the characters in your OTP or whatever...but I'm also a multi-shipper so I'm probably a tad biased.

Haha, I'm usually a hardcore OTPer, but it's not as if I mind people shipping rivalling couples. I mean, it's all about taste, right? What dynamics and character combinations one prefers. Just because I think a pairing is the best ever doesn't mean I expect everybody else to agree with me!

But yeah, I'm not on board with putting a character down just because they happen to be in the way of or a rival to the ship I prefer. I will like or dislike a character because of their characterisation, not who they're paired up with.

Eh, I've got no problems with people having OTPs, or with them disliking pairings in general. I know there are pairings that I don't care for, and pairings I just don't get - and as you said, just because I tend to have a fleet when it comes to ships doesn't mean I'm going to expect everyone to feel the same way.

I generally just don't hold with bashing pairings/characters. Don't like them? Fine, but bashing isn't cool...particularly since people will feel the need to do it whenever it's brought up which can make for some very awkward times for the pairing/character's fans. @_@

I've come across this. I think it's just as bad. So someone doesn't like a character and/or doesn't like that character in a romance, so what? It's okay. It's not like they're telling other people they can't like the character/ship or something. It's mind boggling the leaps and bounds people go to sometimes.

Yeah, and I think people go way too far in their accusations when people just don't like a character, too. I think it all depends on how it's expressed, because using "slut" or "whore" or similar as honest insults is just not OK. Hating a character (any character), however, is OK. Even if it's completely irrational. It's all in how you go about doing it.

I get what you're saying. It's less about hating a character and more about your reasons for hating a character or how you hate a character. You don't like a character? That's fine. You don't like a character because they're black? That's not fine. You express your dislike of a character by being inflammatory? That's not fine.

But yeah, disliking a character because of their actions, or you think they're annoying, or you just happen to not like them? Totally fine and you shouldn't be attacked for it.

So, um, I'm pretty much just saying I agree with you completely.
