Burnout

Guys, what do you do when you're burned out on life?

I've been over applying myself to way too many different things, and now I'm having a hard time finding the energy to apply to the things I need to do. Like writing final projects due this upcoming week.

Normally I'd just sort of suck it up and soldier on, but it's gotten to the point where I'm so stressed that my body doesn't even have the reserves to do shit like recover from the fun seasonal illnesses rampant in colleges. I'm mentally and physically exhausted.

So what do you do to recover from burnout?

I don't/can't. I (am) wait(ing) for break. I'm burnt out too and this is my first night off since September 20. I know that's not helpful in any capacity, but I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in this. I'm watching SNL and 30 Rock, which, although I'm still exhausted, at least I have a reason to laugh now. <3

Aw, that sucks. What kind of field do you work in?

Agreed in that laughing helps. I started watching Nostalgia Chick just for something easy for my mind to engage in, but it ended up giving me more instances of tears-induced laughter than I've had in a while. And I feel better for it.

Yeah, humour/laughing is one of the best remedies for burnout/stress.

This is actually something I've been dealing with a bit recently, since I kind of hate my job and am terrible at dealing with stress.

Personally, when I get burnt out, what I need to do, I just say "fuck it" and take a mental health day. Full out, tell myself "no, you're not doing shit today. It doesn't matter if you've got one thing to do, or ten, but you need a day off." And then just go "durr" for a while.

One particular case I recall was back in grad school, when my thesis was just getting to be too much, I just woke up, got in my car, and drove down to a park by the beach, and wandered around until it started raining. Then I think I drove around in the rain for a few hours. One of the best decisions of my life. The next day, I was back on track, got a fuckton of shit together, and got a good bit of motivation back, and my stress level was back to manageable.

So yeah, actually, consciously deciding to take a day or two off, rather than procrastinating out of stress paralysis, definitely does wonders for my mental health. In my experience, past a certain point, even if you have too much to do to get it done in time, it's still better to call in sick/take time off and ask for an extension where possible or necessary than to drive yourself to a breakdown.

Okay, so now I don't feel so bad for consciously making the decision to not do work right now. This is only my second month of grad school, which included a move to a city I've never even been in before, and living by myself for the first time in my life. It's taken a while to adjust fully, but I still need a day or two to deal with stuff every once in a while.

Damn, starting grad school+moving away+living alone for the first time? you definitely shouldn't feel bad about needing a day off! Grad school alone is a pretty big adjustment, and moving cities *or* living by yourself for the first time are both major life issues to adjust to. It can be really tough. Don't give up, though! Parts of grad school were probably the toughest of my life, although mostly for reasons outside of grad school itself, but it was definitely worth it. And I did actually manage to finish my thesis! Which I guarantee you'll occasionally think won't ever happen, but it will! And it will feel amazing to get it done!

When I really, seriously, major depressive episode burnt out? I had to leave school and move back in with my (very supportive) parents. I spent over a year recuperating before I started getting my life back on track.

I have a tendency to bite off more than I can chew, and end up in a place where I have trouble recuperating energy to want to do the things I put myself in.

If it's feasible, take a vacation. Of course, you can't take one from school, but perhaps you can set an end-of-term reward to get you through the homestretch that is your final projects :(

Unfortunately, a vacation isn't feasible, I'll be working at the end of the term, but! You have actually given me an idea with the rewards, so thank you!
