Cats and dogs

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
A couple days ago, there was a secret where someone didn't like cats. And in the comments, there was bullshit about cats vs. dogs.

I hate to admit it, but it actually really upset me.

I don't understand that bullshit. I like both. I can't be alone in that, can I? And even if I were, then I wouldn't get all bent out of shape because someone like a pet that I wasn't particularly fond of.

I just don't get it. No one ever goes, "OMG WHY DO YOU LIKE BIRDS THEY SUCK," or "WHY DO YOU LIKE CHINCHILLAS THEY SUCK." It's all, "I hate cats" or "I hate dogs." I'm like, how can you even hate a domestic animal? Preferring not to have them as a pet makes some amount of sense, but actually hating them?

I don't know. I guess I should just be like "whatever yo," but I'm pretty upset, because I don't think there's any cause for the sort of vitriol that cats and dogs receive.

There's a lot more exposure to cats and dogs than birds and chinchillas. A lot of people have been in living situations where they had to interact with animals they didn't like as well. Plus if there was a childhood incident that leaves a lasting impression.

I don't know how to explain it exactly but cats just put me on edge when they're around. But I like them on the Internet?

I'm sorry it upset you though.

Yeah, I think that's a big part of it. When I was young, I had two bad incidents involving dogs: one where I was knocked down and another where I was bitten. Naturally, I don't feel all that warmly toward them.

I'm sorry that happened to you. :(

And as a dog lover I'd like to say I think it's completely stupid when people on my "team" try and convince someone who had a traumatic experience to give dogs another chance by talking about how it's unfair to judge all dogs based on experiences with dogs who were mishandled. I don't know that's happened to you but I'm willing to bet it has. And I'm sorry. If you're uncomfortable and aren't interested in interacting with dogs that should be respected.

A lot of people have been in living situations where they had to interact with animals they didn't like as well. Plus if there was a childhood incident that leaves a lasting impression.

See, I can understand that. I just don't get the hate.

To me, hate is both a very strong word and a very taxing emotion. I can think of very few things that I actually hate -- and I certainly don't hate any animals, regardless of the experiences I've had with them.

Individual preferences make sense to me. Like, you don't want to have a cat, because cats aren't your thing for whatever reason? That's totally cool. Same for if you don't want to have a dog. But the idea that one would hate a cat or a dog, and as such decry any person who would willingly own one or the other, seems completely ridiculous.

Tonight, I came across someone who was saying that dogs are disgusting are are basically parasites and that anyone who owns one is stupid, and I was like, "...what?" What's the sense in indulging that sort of opinion? The fact that someone besides oneself has a certain type of pet, and is happy about it, shouldn't have any impact on one's own life. I guess it's just frustration over the "STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE" phenomenon.

Hyperbole gets attention and feels satisfying sometimes? Some people are really boring so they fixate on a "team" to give them an identity? People are shitty? Phobias?

Blaaaah, yeah.

You know how sometimes, you can logically get something, but then another part of you is like, "WHYYYYYYYYYYY?" I think that's essentially what this is, heh. And it's ironic, because the people who make me go "WHYYYY" are those who are foregoing logic in favor of the part of themselves that goes "WHYYYY."

It's reflexive! Woo! Good times.

I agree. Why does it have to be a fight? Not that it isn't okay to not like one, but why do we have to make a battle out of it? Personally, I prefer dogs slightly, but that is mostly because I'm very allergic to cats. Both are awesome.

That being said, I can understand people having a bad experience hating one or the other. I used to hate dogs because some bully in my neighborhood sent his dog at me.

There's also a lot less "WHY DON'T YOU LIKE BIRDS WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?" or "WHY DON'T YOU LIKE CHINCHILLAS WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?"

I think it's that people feel more pressured to like dogs/cats, so they're more assertive in their dislike of dogs/cats.

But I agree that the idea that everyone must prefer cats or dogs, and disdain the other one, is BS.

Sometimes I feel that this is like Marvel vs DC. Somehow, people think that you can't like both without causing biblical plagues.

I love both cats and dogs because they're amazing. Period.

(I also like Marvel AND DC. Both have good and bad points but that doesn't mean that you should pass on good comics because of a Capulets and Montagues style rivalry.)

Eh, I'm afraid of dogs because I was attacked by one when I was a kid, but I like some individual dogs. I don't like it when people say they HATE an animal though. Hard to tell if they just mean dislike or if they actually go around hurting animals.

Link to bullshit :D?

I like both, although I've never lived with either. I've only had positive happy times by hanging out with already-socialised cats and dogs at animal shelters, so I really have no perspective. I really want to adopt a couple cats and a dog once my living space can accommodate that though orz

Yeah, idgi either. As people said above, if you've suffered trauma that's different. But seriously, some people make a production of it. People need to get the fuck over themselves when they're in my house and cringing away from my Golden Retriever as if he's infested with E. coli because "Waaah, I don't want to get hair on my clothes."

First of all, I'm not asking you to leap at the animal and smother it with hugs and kisses. Secondly. YOU'RE DIRTIER THAN THE DOG (OR CAT). FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

*exhales* Rant over.

I'm a bit scared of dogs I haven't met before who look fierce, but other than that, I like dogs and cats equally.

I prefer fish overall and have some and people think I'm weird for that. There's this odd stigma about having fish as pets, as if you're cold or something. So it's not limited to cats and dogs, at least not on the negative end.

That being said, I don't like dogs due to negative experiences with them, whereas I've only ever had positive ones with cats.

That's weird to me, too. I feel like there's some measure of arrogance there, like preferring a certain type of interaction is better than preferring another. I guess there's some uniquely human desire to feel special and better than others, I guess. I just wish that didn't extend to something as ridiculous as the type of pet that one keeps.

I prefer rabbits overall. I'm not keen on other people's pets (basically, if it's not mine I don't want to pat it or love it or anything. Not interested)
I'm rather apathetic over dogs and cats. I dislike cats a bit more because I found one in my house once and my rabbits freerange. I've NO IDEA how it got in or where it came from, but I freaked and chased it out.

But small littly herbivores for me *party of one*

You sound like my sister actually, she has a rabbit. I have to admit it's quite adorable when it isn't stealing my socks.

Mine steal socks too :U The only reason I know you're not my sibling is because we don't live near each other and I've got two rabbits hah :D

it grates on my nerves when i mentioned i like cats better than dogs and people must assume that means i hate dogs, so they fire back with "i hate cats!!" like, ok? that's cool????

collectively, people are so weird.

Re: Cats and dogs

I just really do not like cats due to my experiences with them, my location, and a combination of general disinterest. Cats are pretty common and prevalent, so the topic of my dislike is more likely to come up.
I also hate horses (for different reasons), but I'm less likely to mention it because horses are not a common topic or in the city or hopping the fence into my yard.

It's not a big deal though. I'm not going to go out and poison them or anything.

Granted I am going to get pissed at people's cats leaving birds dead in my yard and eating my plants (1. because they're my plants and 2. one of my plants is poisonous and as much as I hate their cats I don't want them DEAD D:)

tl;dr my hate isn't hurting the cats or that cat's feelings.

Re: Cats and dogs

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both too, actually I like all pets really(bar spiders but they terrify me). I guess I lean a little more towards cats because I've had them all my life so they are more familiar to me but that doesn't mean I hate dogs, I'm just not as used to them.

I don't like it when dogs or cats are insulted or degraded in an argument over which animal is 'better' it's just stupid and I refuse to engage. I had a roommate at uni do this, she was very pro-dog and as soon as she found out I was more of a cat person(for reasons stated above) she felt the need to point out why my opinion was wrong, why cats were stupid and how dogs were just better. I gave up after a few minutes into her tirade and left, I pretty much didn't speak to her again because the vehemence in her argument was absolutely ridiculous given the nature of the debate.

All pets are awesome man, embrace the fuzzy(or not fuzzy).
