Re: Tattoo Questions

As the SO of a veteran tattoo artist.... Tattooists charge by the hour. At our shop, they charge *more* for text, as it's a pain in the ass. So, depending on the calibre of the artist, it's going to cost you anywhere from 100 to 250 bucks to get that. Depending on the size of the font, of course, and the intricacy. Also - where do you want it? Our shop upcharges for 'bikini' area on men and women, as many people don't feel the need to shower before getting tattooed.

We make the design for you. If you have your own, it may not be suitable for a tattoo, or you may decided you don't like it once you actually see it on your body. Most places like to do the designs themselves. as they don't want to do other people's art. Mostly because a lot of other people's art sucks. We have computers at the shop and a billion fonts to look at and you just choose what you like they print it up, etc. No worries. If you already have your font picked out and can make a design, that's fine, but a)know the name of the font and b) realize that fitting it to your body might mean the artist will want to do it his/herself anyway, so it's easier to 'fit' on you.

If you don't like it, you can ask for changes. If you're getting super-nitpicky and saying 'can you extend the serif on this 'T' two millimeters?', they're gonna get pretty annoyed and not be happy. Competent artists should have it like you want it on the first or second try.

Also - be sure you're *clear* about what you want. If you can't communicate what you want very well, they won't be able to come up with a design you like.

Always, always, always check the artists portfolios first. If you don't see anything you like/are impressed by in their portfolios, you're in the wrong place. Good luck!
