Pfft, they go back like a hundred years, maybe.

They've been used as an occult trick for 2-3 hundred.

And within that 2-3 hundred years they've gotten established meanings, which shows ignore for the sake of teh dramaz, which is the source of my annoyance. Whether they're "real" or not is entirely beside the point.

They date back to the 1400s. Although the form has evolved over time as most things do.

Yep. Their use evolved to include divination as early as the 1700s.
