Is having privacy concerns not a valid reason to withhold portions of one's real information?

I have the same problem. I solved it by leaving the field blank.

Good if that works for you. But fuck you for saying it 'squicks' you for what somebody else chooses to put on THEIR OWN profile. Your opinion does not matter. You sound as boring as a box of rocks and the personality of a wet blanket. Your the person that tries to suck the fun and life out of everything.

Some people actually do have a sense of humor. Some people actually have fun with their fandom interests. Hard concept for you to grasp I realize, but get over it.

It gives me a huge embarrassment squick. You want to know why? Because while you may think facebook is just where you play with your friends, that's the place where people in your real life are going to look for you. And what is your employer going to think when they see Hogwarts down as your school? Well, they aren't going to think, wow, that person's creative, let me hire her. They are going to thing, oh god, this person is still waiting for the owl to come with her acceptance letter. How old is she? 12? I want to hire a mature person who will present a professional face to the world.

This is a hard truth, but someone has to tell you. No matter what you think, most people outside of fandom don't get fandom. They don't think it's cute or fun, they think it's weird and childish. Most people are judgmental as fuck, especially when it comes to female nerds, and once something is attached to your real name, it doesn't become unattached any time soon. It can take years to scrub that off the internet.

If you are paranoid about people finding out where you live on facebook, or what your schooling is, don't use facebook. The purpose of that place is so real life people can find you. You want to be fannish and anonymous, use a psuedonmyn, and keep it to LJ or tumblr.
