It's a common conceit, but the old thing about shipping being more about the personalities is true for me. I ship good-looking guys, but they are good-looking guys who have interesting characters.
Now what may hold even more true to this secret is that often the male characters I like are totally not the sort of guys 'd get on with IRL.
Squall Leonhart? Broody bastard - I'd probably find Zell, and definitely Selphie, more fun to hang out with. Dean Winchester? Jerkass womanizing bastard - I'd get on better with Sam, though Cas would probably creep me out. In fact, the one SPN character I'd get along best with would be Becky! She'd be fun!
Does that stop me from fondly remembering my fondness for Squall, or fangirling Dean and Cas (and yes, Sam too - and for more than just his glorious hair)? NO! That's because you can like characters for their drama and faults, even if those faults would drive you away IRL.
...This ended up verbose.
