The secret reminds me of a long rant I read in middle school. The only line I remember from it was, "Japan is a country, not a convention."

Maybe I'm reading your secret wrong but... I think it would apply here. (To more than just your friends.)

No, you're not reading it wrong since the OP thought that many people in Japan would know their anime and made it a point to say they couldn't enjoy their fannish things as people didn't know it.

That one line you said sums-up this secret very well.

I was hoping against hope that maybe they just worded themselves very, very poorly.
