This isn't really accurate either, though. (Well, the "anime is only for children, adults are looked down on" part. Can't argue with your first sentence.) Anime is for kids and teenagers, mostly. Teens are a huge market for anime and manga, extending up through college students. It's after college that you have the big dropoff. But even then, yeah, freaky nerds are definitely looked down on, but it's not all that rare to see a younger adult with like a Bleach design on their jacket.

The real distinction, I think, is between popular and obscure series. One Piece? Totally acceptable in public. Gankutsuou? What the fuck is that?

Also Ghibli is always fair game. No one doesn't like Ghibli.
