So basically you agree with OP that her friends are just jealous, because they're ugly. I mean, I'm not denying that it's possible, but it's assuming a lot and it's kind of reductive. It assumes that OP's friends are unattractive, and that their behavior can be reduced to that unattractiveness. I just don't think "they're just jealous because they're ugly" is ever really true. I'm not saying what they did was acceptable, but "they're just jealous" is an explanation that you see a lot, I don't know if I ever really find it believable, and I think it's kind of petty in the way it assumes that the people are ugly.

I've thought that myself, sometimes... in another community I was part of, you'd always see lots of people whining about people downrating their uploads or stories and other people rushing to reassure them that the only people who'd do that are trolls or "just jealous." It was a nice sentiment, but it was annoying that no one seemed willing to entertain the idea that not everything ever is absolutely perfect.

On the other hand, when you share a picture of yourself and people's reactions are to accuse you of being a liar, essentially, because they just can't believe you'd actually look so pretty... what alternate motivations are there to that attitude? I suppose OP could have a reputation for lying or attention whoring, I guess.

Also, OP's friends don't have to ugly. They could be merely unhappy with their personal appearances or insecure. Though given the proportion of fandom with anecdotes about being bullied or having body image issues, (and the probably well-meaning portion that happily go batshit over advocating their pet issues) I don't see why it's so unbelievable that maybe the OP has friends who associated "pretty people" with "not one of us" or bullies.

You're reading a lot into what I'm saying. I said that they were suffering, that they were unhappy. That could be as simple as being unhappy with how they look, regardless of how others see them. It's really not fair of you to say that I said they were ugly.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a 'they're just jealous because they're ugly' situation though, it could just as easily be a matter of them being jealous because they're not confident in their own looks which could lead to a lot of self-deprecating thoughts like that.

They might be jealous without being ugly - they might just have a poor self-image.

But it's hard to think up a different reason other than jealousy for people not believe that someone posted a real picture based on the fact that it's "too attractive".

And jealousy requires that they want what you have.

And they were talking about looks.

Thus the assumption that they feel that they are not attractive (regardless of their actual appearance) is pretty reasonable.
