I can honestly say I've never seen this. I'm sure it varies by fandom, but the only two fandoms I follow on Tumblr are full of people with a combative attitude about tagging. Most of them refuse to tag anything at all. If someone asks them nicely, they get very nasty and troll the requester, usually getting other people to join in and gang up on them. It's why I just lurk over there now and reserve my fangirling for LJ.

In that case, I'd say:

- ask anon.
- if they don't have anon enabled, lurk in their tumblr for a while and see how they talk to people.
- if they're not a total asshole, ask logged in. And if they are a total asshole, they're not worth it, time to unfollow.
