I've run into those people. They're so surprised that things aren't like the movies and are full of complaints. It's very... irritating.

I live in Northern California, far from Hollywood and nowhere near the beach. I've had family members ask me how often I see celebrities and what it's like to go to the beach and surf everyday.

There have also been people who come to visit and are mad that it's not like it is in the movies and on TV. They expect the entire state to be like Hollywood and San Francisco rolled into a big ball. (The absolute worst is when they expect everyone who lives here to either be a stoner hippie stereotype, gay, or both. There's absolutely nothing wrong with people being either of those, but it's wrong to just assume that everyone in the state fits in two categories.)

For a moment I thought your comment said "North Carolina" and I was like: 0_o

But yeah, I know what you mean. Trust me. Just FYI, a friend of mine now lives in Canada and that hippie/stoner/surfer/gay/do-you-know-this-celebrity? was the one of the main things she got from people. Still gets, actually, even though she's been there for years. Whenever she asks them why they think these ridiculous things about her* they respond, "Well, you know, you're Californian. They're like that. You're like the exception." It's happened so often she's just gotten to the faintly amused stage. So if you ever go there it's best to just say you're American and let it be.

And where I'm from, something that irritates me is that when some people get here they are so surprised that we're not flooded with white people** and can get really racist.

Or they expect the weather to be a certain way and curse the state instead of admitting it's their fault for not checking the weather in the area before coming.

That, or I live in a city near another city. People are constantly forgetting we're not the same city. It's always ends up with them complaining that other city is better and we should be them.

Oh gosh, I started rambling. It appears I have a lot of examples. Sorry about that. But hey, if you've got any more examples so we can even out our grievances I'm willing to listen.

*Some of these people are acquaintances/friends. You'd think they'd know better.
**We have a lot but apparently not as much as they wanted?
