I forgot to mention this earlier, but while I've never been to Japan a friend of mine is Japanese and went to visit her folks, and when she came back she mailed me a gift--a fan guide for my favorite manga, which finished in 2003 (and only recently came back into print) and, as far as I know, the manga doesn't have a huge legion of fans anymore. she found it in a used book store.

So...yeah, you maybe just weren't looking in the right places.
