I've heard of white people getting to be Japanese citizens after a while, but I've also heard that Korean people who were born in Japan, grew up there, don't speak Korean, speak Japanese, and are pretty much culturally Japanese still have to get their visas renewed every few years because legally (?) they can't be Japanese citizens.

Jus sanguini and jus soli are really just how you get citizenship at birth. You can still become a naturalized citizen.
