As someone who lives in Japan, I can say it is exactly like an anime - it's like Paranoia Agent.

Heh, I always thought that anime seemed to have a fascinating, brutal honesty when it came to talking about the issues in modern-day Japanese culture.

The only other anime I can think of that is pretty realistic about Japan is Pom Poko. It's about cute tanuki, but it came out during the early years of the post-bubble economic malaise and a year before the subway attacks and it shows.
