From what I understand (I could be wrong) the book has a positive message about fighting oppression, but the movie - instead of using different actors for different reincarnations/whatever - used makeup to try and portray the same person changing gender and race.

They probably should have used different actors - maybe used make up to make them look more like *each other*, but not to alter race.

What I was referring to was OP's last two sentences. I can't tell if they think the racial miscasting is a sign of race being a fundamental separation of people, or if the fact that people are bothered by the miscasting is a sign of race being a fundamental separation. Depending on which I either agree or disagree.

Yeah, if a book is about fighting oppression and features a diverse cast, then changing the roles, especially giving a non-white character role to a white actor, is pretty telling. Plus black/brown/yellow face is still so shockingly prominent in media, it's embarrassing.
