honestly in my case, I'm just bad at dates. The only reason I even remember 9/11 as 9/11 is because it's called that rather than twin-towers day or something similar. I guess I'm used to things having names rather than dates

i.e remembrance day, black friday, Cataraqui

This. I remember the meltdown/tsumani etc, but numbers and I really don't get along [bit of an annoyance as a history buff, actually], so I usually just aim to get somewhere in the ballpark with dates and leave it at that.

Also, dates that are set up like that are regularly used for both month/day, and month/year - so unless you actually know the date they're talking about there's a lot of ways you could take that.
