I know fic writers use those bands so much that it seems like a cliche - but to my mind, as a casual SPN fic reader, since it is so utterly in character for Dean to be listening to or making a reference to either of those bands, it's not really a problem if they're mentioned in passing. Now, if the fic writer makes it obvious those are the only rock bands they know of and that's why they're using them, that's another thing.

That being said, variety is good. It's not that hard to look up a list of what music has been played on the show, or what bands Dean/Sam have specifically referenced at some point.
