Yeah, games that are very open-world are a bit overwhelming for me. I LOVE Fallout 3, the atmosphere and everything, but... I have a hard time completing it for the same reasons. D:

Yep, this is me with Fallout games too. It took me a year to complete Fallout 3 (with lots of long periods in-between where I didn't play) and I still haven't finished New Vegas...

I heard New Vegas is a little better in that regard, plus the setting (and some of the DLC) REALLY appeals to me. I need to just find the ultimate edition, methinks.

the DLC is absolutely 100% worth it for new vegas, definitely go for ultimate.

oh i would implore you to try and finish new vegas AT LEAST once. hoover dam is my personal favourite part of the game (depending on the faction you're supporting, that is)

I definitely want to! I had the normal version and three different playthroughs. Didn't finish, don't have LIVE so when the Ultimate Edition came out I bought that and started playing Lonesome Road, was even really enjoying it...and got distracted by god knows what. I haven't went back since. *sigh* Eventually I'll beat it...

for the MOST part, i'll agree with you on the open-world bit. coming into a brand new game where they just plop you down and let you do whatever the fuck you want, it can get pretty overwhelming, especially when you're used to strictly linear games. when you're used to games where it's not only possible but encouraged to do everything, collect everything, and complete every quest, it is a huge shake up to be told "it is not physically possible to complete every quest, and certain actions that you take will have irreversible repercussions"

but on the OTHER hand, i have around 400 hours of new vegas and FO3 under my belt, so i'm not very daunted by new generation fallout games anymore haha

Haha, yeah I'm one of the 'do ALL of the things' types so it'd be hard to hold back. I think that's one of my biggest problems really.

I started Fallout 3 and I was really enjoying it, but I had to seek the help of a guide because I kept going on the wrong side missions and getting killed. The guide only helped so much and eventually I stopped playing. I still feel bad about that. I had a female main character and I like to think she was pretty cool.

Yeah I keep dying too LOL. I feel like I should start over (at least for when you first leave the vault. Too bad about the guide, maybe there's a better one online or something. :(

i ended up restarting fallout 3 three seperate times before i finally finished it. ended up taking close to half a year in total.
i found that the key to going far is to plan out your character in advance. antipate what kind of weapons you're going to be using, whether you're going to be aggressive or reasonable, and plan your character build from there.

also, there are two perks whose names i can't recall off the top of my head. one lets you find more caps than you typically would, the other works the same but with ammo. take them both as soon as you can and you will save yourself a lot of ammo shortages (that was my biggest problem with 3. felt like i was constantly struggling to conserve my ammo, as opposed to carrying around a thousand 10 mm rounds in new vegas, which is what i played first)

Thanks for the tips! I definitely was playing a reasonable character rather than aggressive, but I didn't plan in advance much which I clearly should have. And I'll remember about the perks. Someday I may try again.

I kind of made an aggressive character just because I tend to play that type (I ended up with nothing but renegades in my Mass Effect playthroughs). I thought I had it planned out, but going to have to go through it more carefully next time. ;)

Especially with the ammo shortages. Had that so many times.

if you're going to be going aggressive again next time (shoot first ask questions later was more or less my policy in my successful FO3 playthrough), dont bother putting points into charisma or the speech skill. bolster up your agility/small guns, perception/energy weapons, or endurance/big guns instead (unarmed and melee blow in 3, dont waste your time). repair is super useful, lockpick is key, and medicine helps a lot.

also, keep your intel high. more intel = more skill points per level. that, and FO3 has no special content for low intel characters.

of course, there's plenty of other techniques, but this was how i built my LW, and i had significantly less trouble with this character than my previous two.

Yeah, I can't remember what I did, but I figured there wasn't much of a point to charisma or speech if I was going to be aggressive. I do remember the melee being awful though.

I'll keep everything else in mind though, thanks :)
